THE LAW COMMISSION's LIQUOR REVIEW

GALA members and supporters can be proud that what we have been saying for two decades has now changed the mainstream viewpoint.   This is similar to the marked change in public opinion about tobacco.

Sir Geoffrey Palmer’s Law Commission’s view is outlined in his recent speech.   Three of the nine pages are reproduced here.   Nevertheless, however good his final recommendations will be, whether they change New Zealand’s regulations about alcohol advertising and their effect on young people’s attitudes depends on something else.   It depends on political will, and whether enough people lobby politicians strongly enough.    That is our next task, and hopefully yours.   We must write to newspapers and politicans, telling them that a groundswell of opinion demands large effective changes, not cosmetic ones.

The text of pages 7,8, and 9 of Sir Geoffrey Palmer’s speech follows, and the full text may be found here.
